BIOREGIONALISM

Bioregionalism is a way to explore, study, understand, and protect nature and humans from a close-up point of view. Bioregions are defined by the relationship between their inhabitants, the climate, and the landscape. Bioregionalism highlights the unique ecology of each bioregion and helps us understand it.

The key to really understanding an ecosystem is thinking about it as a web. Ask yourself: If you touch a node, where will the threads transmit the vibration? This isn’t easy to predict, and scientists are still investigating it, but there are well-established relationships that you can learn about.

Academic resources are useful, but another vital and essential aspect is first-hand observation. Experimenting with the outdoors is one of the easiest and fastest ways to learn about it. Active observation can be as straightforward or as complex as you want it to be. It can be limited to observing some of the seasons’ changes or amplified to study even the smallest detail in nature.

The essential tools for a naturalist are the senses. An excellent step toward practicing active observation is getting yourself a field notebook and going outside. Take notes on what you see, feel, hear, and sense. Contrast that information with the books that you have at home.

The mundane world around you isn’t the only thing that you should learn about. As you work with the land and local folklore, you will realize that it is full of spirits and entities linked to its nature and history. Josephine McCarthy, in her book Magic of the North Gate, establishes two approaches to magickally exploring the world around you: The first is through the religious and cultural frames of the place. The second is without the religious and cultural frames, exploring the powers directly.13
